Great Expectations

As of Monday, Memorial Day, the unofficial kickoff of summer is officially underway.  I've waited so patiently for its return, and had a few false starts since September.  There were a few unforseen eighty degree days between fall and the present, which I enjoyed fully, especially since they'd caught me (albeit how pleasantly) off-guard.  And now, summer--despite how unofficial, has reached temperatures in excess of ninety degrees, with humidity to boot.  Now that I'm going to live in the moment and each ray of sunshine, now moreso than ever before, I must equip myself with two "S Is for Summer," essentials:

(1) Sunscreen, and

(2) Swimwear

Essential #1 is for safe-keeping and self-preservation.  Between my bleached hair and sun-drenched skin, the last thing I want to look like in Fall 2011, is a shriveled prune--perish the thought!   Neutrogena has an entire line expressly devoted to shielding you, baby and the sport, from the potentially harmful sun rays, all available for less than 12 bucks.  If you're seeking the title of "Little Miss SPF," head on over to Sephora to cop the Sun Safety Kit, which features eleven sun care products, a deluxe-sized sample and an adorable pink beach tote.  This bargain is valued at $147, but can be yours for a mere $25.00.

A glimpse of the cover of the June 2011 issue of Town and Country Magazine is sure to give you "Great Expectations" for officially "Sailing into Summer,"--especially Essential #2:  Swimwear.

Summer 2011 swimwear fashion trends embody the Golden Age of Hollywood, channelling Vintage Glamazons such as Grace Kelly and Rita Hayworth.

So what if your budget isn't sizable enough to sustain a summer-long stay for two in some far-flung, remote archipelago a la Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor (Rest Eternally In Peace, Fair One)!  It's no sweat, you can still be chic and fabulous during your daily poolside lounges and summer-long weekend beach vacays.

American Apparel has Vintage Vixen essentials beginning at $24.00.  There are two, one-piece numbers that are sure to make you the "Belle of the Beach."  The Nylon Tri-Cot Halter One Piece that has super-sexy siren, Marilyn Monroe written all over it ($50.00, sans wind from subway grate).  The Zebra Print Maillot V-Swimsuit ($54.00) is a more contemporary one-piece suitable enough for The Wildchild of Fashion, Lauren Hutton and her adventures in the African Bush.

With all the money you're saving on your own personal collection of glam-swimwear, you're all set for the jet-ski rental and parasailing fees.  Just make certain the strings on your halter are tied tightly.  We don't want any wardrobe malfunctions on the High Seas!

Here's a vintage clip of "Summer Breeze" from The Isley Brothers performing on "Soul Train," that won't endanger our strings even one tiny bit:
